£12,000 for teenager injured in bus accident
Claim type: Public liability
Location: Doncaster, South Yorkshire
Accident type: Road traffic accident
Accident claim value awarded: £12,000
Trevor had been to a party at a friend’s house. It had been a lively evening and Trevor’s friend was a bit the worse for drink. The pair set off to walk the three miles into the town centre so they could catch the last bus home.
It took a little longer to reach the Interchange than Trevor had expected – it wasn’t too easy steering his friend in a straight line and he began to wish they’d set off a bit earlier but neither had been too keen to leave the party.
The neon lights of the Tesco supermarket came into sight – Trevor knew they were almost there and hurried his friend along. They reached the outskirts of the Interchange with only seconds to spare – this really was cutting it fine!
As they made their way over the zebra crossing into the interchange, Trevor saw their bus coming around the corner. This was the last bus out of town and Trevor’s friend would be in serious trouble if he wasn’t home on time tonight, he was on his last warning.
As they reached the opposite side of the crossing, Trevor breathed a sigh of relief, it was OK the bus driver would have seen them, they were straight in his line of vision.
They dashed across to the bus stop where the glass doors swooshed open but panic set in when Trevor realised the bus wasn’t going to stop. He let go of his friend and started to jog along the outside of the interchange, level with the bus, waiving at the driver to stop.
Trevor carried on jogging and waiving at the driver but it wasn’t stopping – couldn’t the driver see him?
As both he and the bus rounded the corner, the bus veered over towards him and knocked him to the ground. In an instant, Trevor was flat on his back and the bus wheels had gone over both his legs.
The bus ground to a halt and the terrified teenager rolled over and crawled out from underneath.
The paramedics were quickly on the scene and wasted no time in getting Trevor to the Accident and Emergency department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
His right leg was broken and he had lost the skin from the top of his other foot. He was in excruciating pain – it was almost unbearable as medical staff tried to manipulate his leg back into place.
There was still more pain to come. He had to have surgery to pin the bones back together and then spent the next two days laid in a hospital bed.
Trevor spent weeks unable to get up and down the stairs and many more weeks relying on his family for help with everyday tasks.
He was fiercely independent and having to ask for help hurt almost as much as the injuries.
On top of that, he was still smarting from having to have his favourite jeans cut off at the hospital and having to throw away the jumper that had been shredded in the accident. He didn’t have a job so replacing them was going to be really difficult.
None of this seemed at all fair – the driver was careless and really should have been able to either stop or at least avoid knocking him over.
Trevor sat chatting to his granddad and told him that if it wasn’t so complicated, he would see a solicitor about compensation.
He didn’t have to worry – granddad told him about The Accident Team – they had helped him in the past and had made things as simple and easy as possible – he was sure they would be able to help in this case too. And because Trevor wasn’t 18 yet, his granddad would be able to claim on his behalf.
The Accident Team agreed to handle the case on a no win, no fee basis and negotiated compensation of £12,000 for Trevor.
