Industrial Deafness and Tinnitus

Industrial Deafness, also known as Noise Induced Hearing Loss is a common form of industrial disease. It is a permanent loss of hearing which affects workers who have been exposed to excessive noise in the workplace. .

Symptoms will vary depending on the damage caused to an individuals hearing, normally depending on the level of exposure to the industrial noise. Some individuals will find it difficult to hear sounds at certain pitches or hear people speaking where there is background noise. It can also affect an individuals sleep, their day to day activities and they may find that they often speak louder because they are unable to hear their own voice.

In some cases industrial deafness can lead to Tinnitus, causing ringing or buzzing noises in the ears or in the head although there is no external sound.

Workers in industries such as metal works, manufacturing, water supply plants and construction are at particular risk to industrial deafness. A number of loud noises from various industries can cause deafness ranging from the machinery in textiles to wood cutting, drilling and printing.

According to the Health and Safety Executive around 170,000 people in the UK suffer from deafness or other ear problems due to excessive noise in the workplace.

The Noise at Work Regulations 1989 requires employers to minimise excessive noise levels by providing appropriate information, hearing protection and training.
Since 1963, it has been generally accepted that employers should be aware of the dangers of excessive noise and exposure after this period will be considered to be negligent.

Compensation for deafness or Tinnitus can range from £1,000 to tens of thousands of pounds.
