Workplace
Illnesses
A
Workplace Illness is a disease or a form of physical
damage resulting from exposure to working in unsafe
conditions. Every year thousands of individuals suffer
from workplace illnesses without being aware of it immediately
as it may not become apparent until many years after
the damage is caused. Some of these have serious and
long-term effects.
A Workplace Illness is traditionally
associated with industrial or engineering occupations
where individuals have suffered injury through industrial
diseases. However, as new working practices have been
established, we have seen work-related medical conditions
develop too for example stress and psychiatric disorder
or from working excessively on a keyboard or a VDU.
Whilst there are many different types
of work related illnesses, they can be broadly categorised
as Respiratory
Diseases, Skin
Diseases, Repetitive
Strain Injuries, Industrial
Deafness, Vibration
Induced Injuries and Cancers.
Workplace Legislation
There is plenty of law for specific illnesses and a
lot of it is driven by European Union Regulations which
are here to protect employees at work. Much of it can
be relied upon when making most types of workplace personal
injury claims. They include:
- The Health and Safety at Work Act
1974
- The Management of Health and Safety
at Work Regulations 1992
- The Workplace (Health, Safety and
Welfare) Regulations 1992
- The Manual Handling Operations Regulations
1992
- The Control of Substances Hazardous
to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)
- The Provision and Use of Work Equipment
Regulations 1998
- The Personal Protective Equipment
at Work Regulations 1992
